Pomegranates earn super food label!

Every once in a while, there comes a food that actually lives up to the hype surrounding it - pomegranate might be that food.
A team of Swiss scientists published an article earlier this year in the journal Nature suggesting that pomegranates may have anti-aging properties. These scientists discovered that after consuming pomegranates or drinking its juice, a compound in the fruit is broken down by bacteria in the stomach to produce a compound called urolithin A (UA).  When they exposed mice to this compound they lived twice as long as mice that were not exposed to the compound. The mice exposed to UA were also 42 percent better at long distance running. It is believed that the key to UA is its ability to improve mitochondrial and muscle function. The team is currently working to create a nutritional supplement, but until that hits the market you can just stock up on pomegranate fruit and juice.
Pomegranates have also been shown to have a number of other beneficial properties besides its anti-aging effects. The Pharmacological Research journal showed that the fruit can lower systolic blood pressure independent of the duration or amount consumed, which means even casual consumption can be good for you.  It may even have anti-cancer potential. Research in the journal of Nutrition and Cancer reported that, when mice ingested pomegranate extract, they were less likely to suffer from DNA damage when exposed to x-rays and they had higher levels of antioxidant enzymes. Over time, DNA damage can lead to cancer so by preventing the damage in the first place cancer risk can be reduced in the long term.
Want a seasonal connection to pomegranates? Chronically eating the type of diet usually associated with the holidays, one high in fat, sugar and cholesterol can lead to obesity and diabetes. Over time, this can take a toll on your liver and increase your risk for a disease called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. A few recent studies show that regular consumption of pomegranate juice can prevent this type of liver disease, even in the presence of other risk factors like obesity and high cholesterol. So, adding some pomegranates to your holiday dishes might reduce the long term effects of all the food you might eat. While this isn’t an excuse to over indulge, it can help undo that Thanksgiving damage.
In addition to its long term benefits, pomegranates contribute to a healthy diet since they are chocked full of beneficial nutrients. Though it may contain 24 grams of sugar a cup of the fruit has:
  • 7 grams of fiber
  • 3 grams of protein
  • 30 percent Vitamin C
  • 36 percent Vitamin K
  • 16 percent folate
  • 12 percent potassium
Let’s recap. Pomegranates are high in vitamins and have anti-aging, anti-cancer, and liver-protecting properties as well as beneficial effects on blood pressure. I think it’s safe to call pomegranates a super food.

It’s no secret that within the pharmaceutical industry lies a blurred line between which prescriptions are helpful to the body and which are harmful, especially when it comes to medications prescribed to those suffering from mental illness. Numerous antidepressants, including Prozac, have been shown to worsen depression and suicidal thoughts in many cases, and ADHD prescriptions are routinely given to children every day.
Numerous international studies have proven that eating an “American diet” high in processed foods and meat increases your risk for depression in comparison to a more “Mediterranean diet” that’s high in vegetables and fruits. Clinical psychologist Dr. Julia Rucklidge has performed multiple studies on how nutrition can prevent and cure many mental illnesses, specifically by utilizing micronutrients.

Why Medication Shouldn’t Be Our First Choice to Treat Mental Illness

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that children with depression who take antidepressants are three times more likely to convert to bipolar disorder than children who aren’t taking antidepressants.
Another study in JAMA found that the participants who were randomly selected to stay on their doses of antipsychotic medications were less likely to recover from schizophrenia in the long-term than people who were randomized to implement a dose reduction or complete elimination of the drug.

Dangers of Common Deodorants

“Why would I want to replace my deodorant?” I asked when one of my coworkers here at CE suggested I ditch the stick I was using. I soon learned that conventional deodorants are filled with toxins like parabens (preservatives), formaldehyde, and aluminum. He showed me research that reveals how using these products for prolonged periods so near to our breasts poses many dangers, including creating estrogen-like (hormonal) effects.
Estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, so some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

The belief that parabens build up in breast tissue was supported by a 2004 study, which found parabens in 18 of 20 samples of tissue from human breast tumours. However, this study did not prove that parabens alone cause breast tumours. Parabens can be found in foods, hygiene products, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, making label reading an essential practice for good health.
Here is a handy website that will tell you exactly what ingredients are in specific products before you choose to buy them. Pro Tip: Parabens are usually easy to identify by name, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparaben.

The Lemon Alternative

Lemon, on the other hand, is 100% natural and rich in vitamins and minerals like pectin, bioflavonoids, vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and citric acid. I’ve actually used lemon in the past to lighten dark spots on my skin. Because it is also antibacterial, this natural deodorant leaves me lemony fresh. It’s not an antiperspirant, however, meaning it’s not going to stop you from sweating, but if you pause for just a moment and actually think about sweating — an important, natural, and healthy mechanism of the body — it seems strange that we ever got it into our heads that we should prevent our bodies from doing it.

To use lemon as a deodorant, simply cut a slice of lemon and gently rub it on your armpit. If you shave your pits, I would advise against doing this immediately after, as it could be painful and cause irritation. Otherwise, apply in the morning and you should be good for the rest of the day.

Because lemons have pretty high concentrations of potassium and magnesium and both these minerals have antibacterial properties, lemon can balance pH levels when applied to the skin. The citric acid, on the other hand, helps curb any odour, leaving you smelling lemony fresh.
(But please note: If you have been using conventional deodorant for many years, it may take your body time to adjust and detox. Your armpit pores have been blocked for years and there will be a lot of buildup that needs to be flushed out before you begin sweating normally again. You may have to deal with a bit of stink at first! Be patient, and trust in your body’s ability to heal.)

Neuroscientists Discover A Song That Reduces Anxiety By 65 Percent (Listen)!

Anxiety — that feeling of dread, fear, worry and panic — is certainly nothing new. Hippocrates wrote about it in the fourth century BCE. As did Søren Kierkegaard in the 1860s. And Sigmund Freud addressed the disorder in 1926.
However, jump to the present and we’re seeing a significant uptick — especially with youth.
Pharmaceutical drugs tend to be the classic treatment for treating anxiety (as well as the biggest money maker). Cognitive therapy is a common approach as well. Those with a holistic bent often turn to meditation, yoga, massage and other relaxation techniques. Music therapy has also been used with some success. But now neuroscientists in the U.K. have zeroed in on a single song that results in a dramatic 65 percent reduction in overall anxiety…

Anxiety & Generation Y

A 2013 survey found that 57 percent of American female university students reported episodes of “overwhelming anxiety.” And in the United Kingdom, the charity YouthNet discovered a third of young women — and one in ten young men — suffer from panic attacks.
Marjorie Wallace, CEO of the charity Sane, believes that generation Y (those born in the 1980s and 1990s) is the age of desperation. “Growing up has always been difficult, but this sense of desperation? That’s new,” she says.
Writes Rachael Dove in Anxiety: the epidemic sweeping through Generation Y:
“So, what’s going on? The rise of technology, overly-protective parenting and “exam-factory” schooling are among the reasons psychologists suggest for our generational angst. Another, brought up on multiple occasions by my peers and by psychologists I spoke to, is the luxury (as ungrateful as it sounds) of too much choice.”
Pieter Kruger, a London-based psychologist, says research indicates that people who feel they don’t have a choice are actually more resilient — mainly because they can blame life or others if they make a wrong decision. However, if you have a range of choices, you have no one to blame but yourself. “We become much more obsessive because we want to make the right decision every time,” he says.
Writer Claire Eastham, 26, agrees on her blog We Are All Mad Here:

“I spend a lot of time worrying about what I am going to do with my life. Previous generations had choice taken out of their hands. If you are told what to do it takes the pressure away.”

In our modern era, decision making can trigger a type of paralysis. Often, we will obsessively research the many different options for, say, a pair of shoes. Eventually, information overload will kick in and shut the whole shopping venture down, leaving us exhausted and guilty for being crippled by such a seemingly simple task.

Technology also contributes to the rise of anxiety. A good number of millennials feel exposed without their smartphones — and are rarely without them. Mobile gadgets tend to be their window to the world and foster a sense of connectedness. But there’s a dark side to feeling the need to keep on top of what everyone is doing on social media — otherwise known as Fomo, or the Fear of Missing Out.
“Fomo is very real and can be a constant addiction that affects anxiety levels and a general sense of wellbeing,” says Kruger.
Social media allows us to compare everything — relationships, diet, figure, beauty, wealth, standard of living — not only with our friends, but with celebrities too. And, as research has shown, time on social media “can cause depression in people who compare themselves with others.”
Besides revamping our lifestyles and limiting exposure to social media — and learning to work with a sometimes overwhelming abundance of choice — neuroscientists have found listening to a specially designed song can have a profound influence over our levels of anxiety.

The Creation Of The Ultimate Anti-Stress Music

Researchers at Mindlab International in the U.K. wanted to know what kind of music induces the greatest state of relaxation. The study involved having participants try to solve difficult puzzles — which inherently triggered a certain degree of stress — while connected to sensors. At the same time, participants listened to a range of songs as researchers measured their brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure and rate of breathing.
What they found is that one song — “Weightless” — resulted in a striking 65 percent reduction in participants’ overall anxiety, and a 35 percent reduction in their usual physiological resting rates.
Interestingly, the song was specifically designed to induce this highly relaxed state. Created by Marconi Union, the musicians teamed up with sound therapists to carefully arrange harmonies, rhythms and bass lines, which in turn slow a listener’s heart rate and blood pressure, while also lowering stress hormones like cortisol.
In fact, the music is so effective, that many of the female participants became drowsy — to the point where lead researcher Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson advises against listening to it while driving.

You Can Kill Bacteria That Causes Tooth Decay, Pneumonia and Tuberculosis With Only One Seed!

Cashew nuts are seeds in a kidney shape, which are located in the cashew apple that grows in the coastal regions of northeast Brazil. The main commercial producers of cashews include Nigeria, Brazil, India, Tanzania, and Mozambique.
The cashew nuts contain anacardic chemicals which kill the positive bacteria which lead to acne, tooth decay, pneumonia and tuberculosis.

Moreover, the collection of 20 years of dietary documents from the Nurses’ Health Study on 80,000 women indicates that the consumption of minimum 1 ounce of cashew nuts every week reduces the risk of developing gallstones by 25 percent. This amount is equal to 2 tablespoons of nut butter.
The anacardic acids in cashews destroy gram-positive bacteria that lead to tooth decay, acne, Francisella tularensis, tuberculosis, leprosy, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. 1 part of this acid dissolved to 200,000 parts water to as low as 1 part in 2,000,000 is lethal to Gram-positive bacteria in only 15 minutes.

Cashew nut shell liquid and the anacardic acids have potent antioxidant, antitumor and anti-Helicobacter pylori properties. Therefore, the cashew nuts effectively fight cancer and ulcers in the gut. Research has shown that the consumption of these nuts reduces the risk of pancreatic cancer.
The high triglyceride levels of diabetics are successfully reduced due to the consumption of monounsaturated fat. Triglycerides are a kind of fat that are transported in the blood, and if in high levels, lead to raised risks of heart diseases.
These nuts also have potent cardioprotective properties. Additionally, the journal Obesity published a study which found that the consumption of minimum 2 a week lowers the risk of weight gain.
A 28 month study which involved 8,865 adult women and men in Spain found that those who ate nuts minimum twice per week, had a lower risk of weight gain by 31 percent.  Researchers found that the frequent consumption of nuts led to a reduced risk of weight gain for 5 kg or more.

Fitness trainer helps video gamers stay in shape!

Jake Middleton is a fitness trainer for video gamers.

Take a few deep breaths, as he often tells his clients, and soak this in: We are a video-gaming nation, that’s a fact. As such, we can either waste away there with a four-pack of Red Bull and bag of flaming Cheetos — or we can follow Middleton’s sound-body, sound-mind advice.

“A lot of research shows that aerobic exercise is really good for brain function,” says Middleton, 24, of Blue Springs, Mo. “When you’re gaming you’re using your brain more than anything else.”
Middleton knows more than a little about physiology and the joystick culture. He knows that in the heat of battle a player’s heart rate may surpass 160 beats per minute. He knows how blood sugar can spike and crash under the influence of energy drinks.
Arthritis can strike. Wrists go numb. Sleep might suffer.
Maybe most troubling is that just as society has embraced big-money, professional video-game competition, “a bunch of these guys are burning out and retiring in their early 20s,” Middleton says.
So welcome to Mat Smith’s garage.
Middleton is there in Oak Grove, Mo., spotting Smith, 21, while Smith hoists a 60-pound barbell from a squat, back straight, shoulders up. Again and again. The point of this is to tone muscles that promote good posture.
Then they toss a medicine ball.

A common malady of the intensive gamer is the drooping of shoulders and slow caving in of the chest. Smith was fit and trim from the start, but after following Middleton’s regimen for a month, he says he does feel better. When playing “League of Legends” — sometimes for several hours at a time — his posture seldom slips.

Smith is a member of TeamKC, a collection of “League of Legends” players who compete in amateur tournaments. You might know the game from an ESPN online broadcast in 2014, when the world championship from South Korea drew more viewers globally than did Game 7 of the World Series between the Royals and the San Francisco Giants.
E-sports, they call it. E-athletes, the players are dubbed.
The sport’s broadening appeal and corporate sponsorships present opportunities for enterprising sorts such as Middleton, who holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Missouri State University.
Fewer than a half-dozen of those jobs exist in the U.S., says Middleton, who earns his income as a personal trainer for the Blue Springs YMCA. He is providing his services to TeamKC for free.

Proven results
It’s not all fun and games for the soft-spoken Middleton — himself a video-gamer who qualifies as buff, thanks.
While in college he teamed with Missouri State instructor Scott Richmond to test a hypothesis that exercise could enhance game scores. Participants in the study were randomly assigned to “a no exercise control group” and another team that spent time lifting weights and riding stationary bikes.
Using “League of Legends” as a test case, Middleton’s theory landed a direct hit: The exercise group “increased in every performance category with a 28.9 percent increase in win percentage, a 1.4 increase in K/D ratio (kills to deaths),” according to his paper, and “a 14.4 increase in total points/games played.”
He has issued to TeamKC workout programs customized to each player. For gamer Smith, Week 1 included two daily sets of push-ups, 10 “frog jumps,” 20 forward lunges, a “Superman” stretch that involved extending the arms and arching the back from a prone position, and regular flexing of the fingers and wrists.
“Working out was something I’ve wanted to do — just to feel better in general — but didn’t,” Smith said,

Tourney tested

More than 500 computer screens glowed in a cavernous room at KCI Expo Center, their users communicating through headsets. Last weekend, TeamKC joined other competitive squads for the 72nd gathering of KCGameOn.

Fitness trainer Middleton was a calming presence. Between rounds he quietly led his five-man squad in deep breathing and hand stretching.
Devon Schreiner heads up LeagueKC, which his business card calls “the official League of Legends community in the greater Kansas City area.” He travels with TeamKC and provides encouragement:
“Here’s the thing. What I want you to do is relax and have fun. Nobody here has trained as much as us … There will be mistakes but don’t let them get to you.”

They played flawlessly in the first round against a hastily-assembled squad that called itself Dank Memerinos. But as midnight neared, double elimination would catch up to TeamKC.
They finished second. But looked fit doing it.

New research: Parkinson’s could start in the gut, not the brain!

People with Parkinson’s know that having an untreatable condition can be devastating. There are drugs and methods of treatment, but as of yet, there is no cure. The disease, which affects the nervous system, is a life-long degenerative disorder that affects the quality of life of everyone who has it.
It’s always been believed that the root cause of the disease lay in the brain since the symptoms of the disease are largely caused by an imbalance of dopamine. But new research has shown that the disease might begin in the gut. Paving a new way, this research that shows the link between the stomach and the brain could lead to new treatment methods and much earlier diagnosis. Understanding this relationship could have profound effects for many, and the research aims to eventually change the lives of those living with Parkinson’s (1).

Potential Causes

Exactly what causes Parkinson’s disease is unknown, however, there is a strong evidence that it is caused by
  • genetics
  • toxins (manganese, carbon monoxide, carbon disulfide)
  • oxidative stress



One of the main symptoms of Parkinson’s is slowed movement. Affected people might walk very hesitantly and only take short increasingly small steps. Initiating that first step is particularly hard, and once they are moving it’s difficult to stop again. As the condition progresses, the arms stop swinging when they walk and gripping their hands for tasks becomes more difficult. As well, due to reduced activity in the facial muscles, the face becomes more mask-like and speech becomes more monotone (1).


People with Parkinson’s experience muscle stiffness especially in the arms, legs, and neck. Even when someone else tries to force their arms or legs to move, the muscles put up resistance. This can even cause extreme aches in the muscles (1).


This symptom of Parkinson’s is fairly well known, and most people with Parkinson’s will have a tremor. The shaking associated with tremors will not be as severe during movement but is particularly common in the hands. Things like handwriting become more difficult the worse these tremors become (1).

Link between the stomach and Parkinson’s

In a recent study on mice, it was demonstrated that there might be a link between Parkinson’s disease and the stomach. These new findings might explain why people with Parkinson’s complain of stomach problems, like constipation, for up to ten years before their diagnosis (3).


The team of researchers found out about the link between the gut microbiome and Parkinson’s disease through observing the spread of toxic fibers made of a substance known as alpha-synuclein. For some reason in people with Parkinson’s these alpha-synuclein clump together and form fibers that damage the nerves in the brain. It was found that those with Parkinson’s also had these fibers in the gut (3).

Parkinson’s and the microbiome

In the study, mice with Parkinson’s were raised in normal non-sterile cages, or in sterile germ-free environments. The mice who were raised in the sterile environment showed fewer motor deficits and less toxic fibres in the brain. The mice raised in the normal environment developed Parkinson’s as expected, but when treated with antibiotics their symptoms were reduced, suggesting something in their microbiome was enhancing symptoms (3).

Gut bacteria

The team injected the mice raised in the sterile environment with gut bacteria from humans with Parkinson’s and they quickly deteriorated. In comparison with when gut bacteria was injected from healthy people, it did not have the same effect. This left the team of researchers quite confident that gut bacteria regulate, or are even required for the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (3).

Brain activation

They believe that the gut bacteria might be releasing chemicals that over activate parts of the brain leading to damage and the onset of the disease. But they agree a lot more research needs to be done before they can conclusively say what’s going on (3).
The team of researchers now want to look at the gut microbiomes of people with Parkinson’s to try and narrow down which microbes seem to be predisposing people to the disease. This could mean a potential screening process for Parkinson’s and would help diagnose before symptoms demonstrate. It could also contribute to generating new treatment options (3). It will take many years to translate these findings in mice into human trials, but we are well on the way to understanding this elusive disease much better.

Lung cancer symptoms that you need to know – even if you’re not a smoker!

Lung cancer is the second most diagnosed form of cancer in both men and women. About fourteen percent of all new cancers are lung cancers. In the United States in 2016 alone, there has been about 224,390 new cases of lung cancer and about 158,080 deaths due to lung cancer. Each year more people die from lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined, making lung cancer the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. With the odds of developing lung cancer for men at about 1 in 14 and for women 1 in 17, it’s important to know the signs because catching it early makes all the difference in the long-term success of treatment (1).

There are two main kinds of lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer, and a diagnosis for each is made by looking at the cells under a microscope. Small cell lung cancer is more aggressive and forms in the tissues of the lung and can spread to other parts of the body. Under a microscope, the cancer cells look small and oval-shaped. There are three kinds of non-small cell lung cancer, and they are squamous cell carcinoma, large cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma, they are more common than small cell lung cancer (2).

The signs and symptoms

But what are the signs that you should be looking out for if you’re on the watch for lung cancer? There are a number of signs and symptoms that will demonstrate with the onset of lung cancer. These are the early signs of lung cancer.
  • A cough that worsens or doesn’t go away
  • chest pain that is constant and made worse by deep breathing or coughing
  • blood stained sputum (mucus and other matter coughed up from the lungs)
  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing
  • frequent chest infections (bronchitis or pneumonia)
  • fatigue
  • hoarseness
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • collapsed lung
  • severe shoulder pain (caused by a superior sulcus tumor pressing on a nerve)
  • problems in one eye (dropping or weakness of the eyelid, and a smaller pupil)
  • reduced or absent perspiration on the same side of the face as the affected eye (3)
Here are the late signs and symptoms of lung cancer.
  • The buildup of fluid around the lungs
  • bone pain
  • jaundice
  • difficulty swallowing
  • superior vena cava syndrome
  • neurological changes (weakness, headache, numbness in a limb, dizziness, seizure)
  • enlarge lymph nodes in the neck or above the collarbone (3)



The incidence of lung cancer is strongly related to smoking with about 90 percent of lung cancer cases arising as a result of tobacco. Even people who reside with a smoker are twenty-four percent more at risk of developing lung cancer (4).


Exposure to asbestos is another cause of lung cancer. The fibers are silicate fibers that can persist for a lifetime in lung tissue following exposure to asbestos. As asbestos was used widely as insulation for a long time, it is very probable you’ve been exposed to some without your knowledge. Even though asbestos is banned in the United States, it is still linked to lung cancer and mesothelioma. People exposed to asbestos have a fivefold greater risk of developing lung cancer. The risk multiples if the person is also a smoker (4).

Radon gas

Radon gas is a natural, chemically inert gas that is a product of uranium. It is known to cause lung cancer with an estimated twelve percent of lung cancer deaths attributable to radon gas. The environmental protection agency estimates that one out of every fifteen homes in the U.S. contain dangerous levels of radon gas (4).

Air pollution

Air pollution from cars and industrial by-products are also a source of lung cancer. Up to one percent of cancer deaths are attributable to breathing polluted air. Experts believe that prolonged exposure to polluted air can carry a similar risk as that of passive smoking (4).
